Dr. Gregory Thornbury Named Values & Capitalism Visiting Professor

Dr. Gregory Thornbury, president of The King’s College in New York City, has been named the inaugural Values & Capitalism Visiting Professor for the 2015–2016 academic year. In this new position, which will rotate annually, Dr. Thornbury will collaborate with V&C on conferences, campus events, and a number of other project initiatives.

Dr. Thornbury is the sixth president of The King’s College and a visiting professor of philosophy at both Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky and Ansgar Teologiske Høgskole in Norway. He is a senior fellow for The Kairos Journal, an online publication which aims to help church leaders think critically about public engagement, and also serves as a theological editor for Biblemesh.com. His recent books focus on the relationship between philosophy, theology, and culture. They include “Recovering Classic Evangelicalism: Applying the Wisdom and Vision of Carl F. H. Henry,” and “Christianity and Doctor Who,” with graphic artist Ned Bustard. His forthcoming work, “Only Visiting This Planet” (Penguin/Random House, 2016), is a biography of the 1970s Jesus Movement icon and rock pioneer, Larry Norman, whom Thornbury calls, “the forerunner of the millennial generation’s attitude toward religion.”

Prior to joining King’s in 2013, he served at Union University in Tennessee as a Professor of Philosophy, Founding Dean of the School of Theology, and Vice President. He has completed graduate work at Southern Seminary in Louisville and the University of Oxford in England.  A popular campus speaker and lecturer, he is also a member of the Society of Christian Philosophers.

An astute cultural commentator and moonlighting guitarist, Dr. Thornbury has been described as “Jonathan Edwards meets Rolling Stone” by ERLC president Russell Moore and “America’s first hipster college president” by The American Spectator.

“Dr. Thornbury has a remarkable ability to synthesize questions of theology, economics, and culture,” said V&C program manager Meredith Schultz. “Through this partnership, we believe V&C will be able to make an even more compelling case for the compatibility of faith and free enterprise in the year to come.”

Dr. Thornbury and his wife, Dr. Kimberly Thornbury, who serves as Vice President for Institutional Research and Strategic Planning at King’s, reside in Manhattan with their two daughters.
